Job Description
THE ROLE:

The Data Scientist-Power Systems Lead will be responsible for building and maintaining analytical tools and capabilities that help VEIR identify strategic product, project, and business growth opportunities and execute day-to-day business. You will work closely with our growth strategy, commercial, regulatory, and product development team members, customers, and external partners to continuously evaluate and improve VEIR's analytical toolkit. The ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and continuously adapt are essential skills for this role. VEIR seeks an individual who is excited about modeling and analytics tools and the ability to apply them to highlight the value of VEIR's innovative hardware technology.

This position is expected to be based at VEIR HQ in Woburn, MA; we are willing to consider hybrid or remote locations for well-qualified candidates.
You are:
  • Experienced in power systems. You are a user of power flow analysis tools, and transmission and generation capacity expansion models such as Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS)
  • An excellent communicator. You clearly communicate goals, timelines, progress, and risks to team members at VEIR and to external partners and advisors.
  • A collaborator. You can work cross-functionally with team members, external partners, and customers to build and support analytical tools that reflect diverse interests and perspectives.
  • Analytical. You have experience with a variety of analytical approaches and know how to effectively apply them to solve different types of problems. You know how to apply analytical rigor to drive strategic insights.
  • Creative. You find creative ways to solve problems in the absence of pre-existing data and tools.
You will:
  • Establish creative analytical approaches that enable VEIR to efficiently gather market data and convert it to market intelligence and identify the best locations to deploy VEIR transmission lines and the best VEIR transmission line solutions to address specific customer needs.
  • Understand the behavior of VEIR's advanced superconductor solution on electrical transmission systems.
  • Develop and utilize a suite of analytical tools and models that integrate into and support VEIR's strategic growth activities, commercial project pipeline, policy and regulatory efforts, and product development.
  • Establish creative analytical approaches that enable VEIR to efficiently gather market data and convert it to market intelligence and identify the best locations to deploy VEIR transmission lines and the best VEIR transmission line solutions to address specific customer needs.
  • Perform studies to understand how VEIR lines will integrate into and operate with existing power system infrastructure and components.
  • Work alongside VEIR's transmission line design engineers to propose actual transmission project options to solve specific customer needs.
  • Work closely with the strategy, commercial, regulatory, and product development teams to continuously update and validate model input assumptions and analytics data sources and approaches.
  • Support the company's mission to unlock the transmission capacity necessary for deep reductions in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
  • Comply with safety standards and company guidelines
  • Promote safety, efficiency, teamwork, and collaboration
Basic Qualifications:
  • The position requires someone who is highly motivated and organized with project management, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working in a start-up company and/or in a product development environment and/or as a consultant in the energy industry
  • Degree in electrical/power system engineering, environmental science, technology policy, economics, or related field
  • Competency in Python
  • Familiarity working with and managing large, structured databases
  • Demonstrated experience with geospatial databases and analysis and techno-economic optimization-based analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage analytical tools that help resolve complex problems in creative ways
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and clearly communicate goals, findings, and issues
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision; self-motivated and directed
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in electrical/power systems engineering, environmental science, technology policy, economics, or related field
  • Competency in multiple programming languages, libraries, and tools in each of the following categories: front-end stack (e.g., JavaScript, React, Angular, Mapbox, and AWS), back-end stack (e.g., Python, R, Julia, MATLAB), and geospatial back-end (GeoPandas, raster image databases, vector feature databases, coordinate reference system conversions, spatial indexing)
  • 2+ years of experience and success in an early-stage technology start-up company or in a consulting role in the energy industry
  • Willingness to learn the engineering, economic, and regulatory factors that drive transmission investment decisions
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Expected Outcomes
  • 3 months: Understand VEIR product development, commercial project pipeline, and strategic growth processes and goals.
  • 6-12 months: Become a major contributor to VEIR's suite of analytical tools, software products, and/or front-end dashboards.
